INSTRUCTION, TRAINING & COMPETITION - My Philosophy
My goal in training horse and rider is to help them obtain the highest level of achievement that each individual can reach. Any horse and any person can do Dressage. For the rider, I teach them to have an independent seat, soft, allowing hands and a good basic, functional position. For the horse, I train them to be light, energetic, supple and responsive.
My training style is flexible enough to use the methods that are best to achieve the desired goal for each individal. Not every horse, as well as every rider, will respond to the same training. I have attended clinics of several different "styles" of riding and training. From each clinic I took what I could use in order to have a large repertoire that has helped many horses and riders in many different situations.
Riding and training must be made fun. When it is no longer fun there is no point in doing it.
As far as competition goes, the rider is truly competing against him/herself to judge the amount of improvement he/she is making. As competitors we are being evaluated by our peers who are to be the most knowledgeable in the area of dressage. Competitions are the only indicator of our effective and correct progress. This goes for my students as well as myself and my horses. Some trainers who don't compete themselves can say "oh you are wonderful! You have advanced so far.." but will you and your horse come up to the standard of competition? The proof is in the judging. ....Evelyn Susol
